Recharging After School
Our children can quickly run out of energy after a busy school day. Their Executive Function (EF) battery gets drained from a full day of learning, self-regulation, and socializing. And by the time they walk through the door at home, they may be running on empty.
But here’s the good news: just like a phone that needs a recharge, our kids’ EF batteries can be topped up. With the right strategies, we can help our children get back to a place where they can handle homework, chores, and the demands of family life without the conflict.
Here are 3 simple ways to recharge after school:
Snack Smart
A snack rich in protein is a great way to give their brain (and body) a boost. Try options like hard-boiled eggs, cheese, yogurt, trail mix, or apple slices with nut butter. A healthy snack can help refuel their EF battery and keep their energy up for the rest of the afternoon.Move to Re-energize
Movement that helps “reset” the brain and body. Depending on sensory needs, this could be anything from a trip to the playground, a quick game of catch, or a bike ride around the neighborhood. Find an activity they enjoy that helps them release pent-up energy and feel refreshed.Take a Brain Break
Sometimes, the best way to recharge is to pause and relax. Encourage a short brain break with activities like drawing, listening to music, or spending time with the family pet. Even a few minutes can make a world of difference in their ability to focus and engage in the next task.
This matters, because when kids’ Executive Function capacities are drained they struggle to manage tasks at home. But by intentionally helping them recharge, we can set them up for success with homework, chores, and other responsibilities. This leads to fewer afternoon struggles and more cooperation at home.
Wishing you and your child continued learning and success.
