Breathe Into Conference Season

In many parts of the world this change of season brings with it report cards, parent-teacher conferences, and progress meetings. For children who are struggling with learning and behavior, some of these conversations can be difficult. To stay centered as we move through potentially tricky discussions in the weeks ahead, we can:

  1. Focus on our family’s values. Recommit to what we believe truly matters as we’re striving to raise good humans. We can center these values as we align our expectations and behavior.

  2. Get curious about our children at this moment in time. We can consider what motivates them, how they feel seen, where they need support with skill building, and when they need rest and connection.

  3. Prioritize care and cultivate gratitude. Remember to look after ourselves and our families through the fundamentals of nutrition, physical activity and sleep, and to seek joy with our children every day without any agenda.

And, we might notice that things have begun to feel slightly harder now that the novelty of the new school year has begun to fade. Social wobbles and difficulties with transitions, flexibility, time sense and planning may begin to reveal themselves. We can work in collaboration with our child’s teachers to create supportive plans to guide us through this season.
